The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a superhero film franchise built on Marvel Comics characters, launched with Iron Man in 2008. Across dozens of interconnected films and series it follows the Avengers, Earth’s mightiest heroes, through the Infinity Saga and beyond, all leading to some of the highest-grossing movies ever made.

What are the Infinity Stones?
The six Infinity Stones are the most powerful objects in the universe, each governing a fundamental aspect of existence: Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time and Soul. Assembled together in the Infinity Gauntlet, they grant the wielder near-omnipotence.
The entire Infinity Saga is, at its heart, a race to control these stones, culminating in Thanos using all six to erase half of all life, and the Avengers’ years-long effort to undo it.
Life after the Infinity Saga: the Multiverse Saga
Phase 4 onward moved past Thanos into the Multiverse Saga, built around the idea that infinite parallel universes exist and that villains can hop between them. Spider-Man: No Way Home confirmed that all three live-action Spider-Man franchises share one multiverse, bringing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back as genuine variants of Peter Parker rather than a reboot gimmick.
The saga's original main villain was meant to be Kang the Conqueror, introduced in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. After Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, was dismissed from the role, Marvel recast the Multiverse Saga's central antagonist as Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., returning to the MCU in a new role after Iron Man.

RDJ improvised the most famous line
“I am Iron Man” at the end of the first film wasn’t fully scripted. It broke the comic tradition of a secret identity and set the MCU’s confident tone.
Thanos was teased for six years
He first appeared in a 2012 Avengers post-credits scene, but didn’t become the main threat until Infinity War in 2018.
The shield-throw sound is a real object
Marvel’s sound teams built the iconic vibranium clang from layered metallic recordings, and it’s become instantly recognisable.
Wakanda was barely in the comics first
The MCU expanded Wakanda far beyond its comic roots, and Black Panther became a cultural phenomenon and Oscar winner.
Spider-Man took a Sony deal to join
Because Sony held the film rights, an unprecedented studio agreement was needed to bring Spider-Man into the MCU.
Endgame’s time-travel breaks its own rules
The film deliberately mocks classic time-travel movies, then sets up its own logic, a favourite fan-debate to this day.
