What counts as anime?
At its simplest, anime is animation produced in Japan, but it has grown into a recognisable style and storytelling tradition all its own. Most anime begins life as manga (Japanese comics) before being adapted, and series range from long-running shonen battle epics to tightly plotted thrillers, romances and studio films.
That breadth is why it makes such a great quiz topic: a casual viewer knows the big shonen names, but true fans go deep on studios, arcs, and the manga chapters the anime never reached.
Manga vs. anime: what's the difference?
Manga are the original Japanese comics; anime is the animated adaptation. Because manga is cheaper and faster to produce, it almost always runs ahead of the anime, meaning devoted manga readers often know major plot twists years before they're animated. Some long-running series (One Piece, My Hero Academia) have had the anime catch up close to the manga's current chapter; others keep a large gap.
