Bollywood
Bollywood is the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, and the heart of Indian cinema, the largest film industry in the world by number of films produced. Famous for its song-and-dance spectacle, sweeping romance and larger-than-life stars, it releases hundreds of films a year and commands a fan base of well over a billion people.

What makes Bollywood different?
Bollywood is defined by the masala film, a blend of romance, comedy, drama, action and, above all, music. Songs are not interludes but a core storytelling device, with elaborate dance numbers that become cultural events in their own right. A single hit soundtrack can outlive the film that carried it.
Beyond spectacle, Bollywood is a shared language across India and its diaspora, a common set of stories, stars and songs that billions grew up on, which is exactly what makes it such rich quiz territory.
Bollywood vs. India's other film industries
"Bollywood" specifically means Hindi-language cinema from Mumbai; it isn't a catch-all term for Indian film. India has several major regional industries that are each huge in their own right, sometimes producing films that outsell Bollywood's own releases nationally.

Things nobody knew
The details that separate a fan from a fanatic.
DDLJ still plays in a Mumbai theatre
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has screened at Maratha Mandir almost continuously since 1995, the longest-running film in history.
Playback singers are the real voices
Actors rarely sing; legendary playback singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar gave voice to decades of on-screen stars.
“Chaiyya Chaiyya” was shot on a moving train
The famous Dil Se song was filmed atop an actual moving train, with dancers performing on the roof, no green screen.
Lagaan almost didn’t get made
Studios feared a period cricket epic would flop; it became an Oscar nominee and one of India’s most loved films.
SRK started in television
Before becoming “King Khan,” Shah Rukh Khan was a TV actor, and famously began his film career playing anti-hero roles.
Spain’s tourism boomed after one film
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sent so many Indian tourists to Spain that its tourism board publicly thanked the filmmakers.
Fan theories
Some confirmed, some still argued about twenty years on.
- Debated
Bollywood's "Khan rivalry" was ever a real feud
Decades of tabloid coverage frame Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir Khan as career-long rivals. All three have publicly downplayed it as media narrative rather than genuine animosity, though fans still debate how much truth is behind it.
- Confirmed
Many Bollywood hits are official remakes
Films like Ghajini and Zinda were official Hindi remakes of South Indian originals, a well-documented and increasingly common industry practice, not an urban myth.
