General Knowledge
General knowledge is exactly what it sounds like: a broad grasp of facts across science, history, geography, sport, culture and more. It is the backbone of every pub quiz and trivia night, and the truest test of an all-rounder, because you never know which category the next question will come from.
The classic quiz categories
Almost every trivia night draws from the same handful of pillars. Master these and you can hold your own anywhere.

How do you get good at general knowledge?
General knowledge isn’t about memorising everything: it’s about broad, shallow coverage plus a few deep pockets. The best quizzers read widely, stay curious about how things work, and pay attention to the categories that come up again and again: capitals, elements, world leaders, sporting records and famous firsts.
The fastest way to improve is simply to play: every quiz you take reveals a gap, and the questions you get wrong are the ones you never forget. That’s exactly what makes it a perfect topic to test yourself on.
"Facts" that are actually commonly misremembered
Some of the most confidently stated trivia "facts" are subtly wrong, worth knowing before they cost you a point.
| Commonly believed | Actually true |
|---|---|
| Humans have five senses | Most scientists count at least nine, including balance and temperature |
| Goldfish have a 3-second memory | Studies show goldfish can remember things for months |
| Napoleon was unusually short | At about 5'7", he was roughly average height for his era |
| We only use 10% of our brains | Brain imaging shows we use virtually all of it, just not all at once |

Things nobody knew
The details that separate a fan from a fanatic.
An octopus has three hearts
Two pump blood to the gills and one to the rest of the body, and their blood is blue, thanks to copper-based haemocyanin.
Honey never spoils
Archaeologists have found pots of honey in ancient Egyptian tombs, over 3,000 years old, that are still perfectly edible.
France has the most time zones
Thanks to its overseas territories spread across the globe, France spans twelve time zones, more than any other country.
Lightning strikes Earth ~100 times a second
Around the world, roughly 8 million lightning strikes hit the planet every single day.
Sharks predate trees
Sharks have existed for over 400 million years: they were swimming the oceans before the first trees ever grew on land.
You can’t tickle yourself
The brain predicts your own touch and cancels the sensation, which is why self-tickling never works.
Fan theories
Some confirmed, some still argued about twenty years on.
- Confirmed
The "10% of the brain" myth is false
Brain-imaging studies confirm humans use effectively all of their brain over the course of a day, just not every region simultaneously, and the "10%" claim has no basis in neuroscience.
- Debated
Whether Pluto should still count as a planet
The International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a "dwarf planet" in 2006, but the decision remains actively contested by some astronomers and the public, keeping "is Pluto a planet" a genuinely live trivia argument.
